The effects of the naturally occurring stilbenoid pinosylvin on neutrophil activity in vitro and in experimental arthritis are reported. Pinosylvin significantly decreased the formation of oxidants, both extra- and intra-cellularly, and effectively inhibited protein kinase C activation. Pinosylvin administration decreased the number of neutrophils and significantly reduced the amount of reactive oxygen species in blood. Pinosylvin, as an effective inhibitor of neutrophil activity, is potentially useful as a complementary medicine associated with medicaments prescribed for treating persistent inflammation.
