Gnotobiotic piglets protected by E.coli Nissle 1917 against infection with Salmonella Typhimurium thrived and their wellness correlated with absence of IL-10 in plasma and decrease of TNF-α in plasma and ileum. Piglets associated with Bifidobacterium choerinum and infected with S. Typhimurium suffered by severe systemic infection and mounted similar responses of inflammatory cytokines as piglets infected with Salmonella alone
