There was investigated the possibility for increasing the apparent specific surface area of polystyrene sorbents crosslinked to different extent by irradiation with gamma-rays. Since the radiolysis is known for its ability to initiate radical reactions, post-polymerization crosslinking may be performed as a result of the reactions of neighboring chains carrying free radicals. The examinations made both in dry and swollen state of polymers aim to assess the optimal conditions for the radiation-induced crosslinking of polystyrenes. The optimal procedure should embrace both a suitable irradiation dose and a suitable content of divinylbenzene crosslinker for to overcome the protective action of the benzene rings and simultaneously to minimize the negative effect of chain-scission competing the crosslinking.
