AnnotationWe developed software implementation of a number of methods for surface area estimation based on evaluation of 3D image data, namely interactive stereological methods and automatic or semi-automatic digital methods. The methods for surface area measurement were demonstrated on 3D images acquired by confocal microscopy or electron tomography techniques. We compared the above stereological and image analysis methods for surface area estimation from the point of view of their applicability, efficiency and precision
