Fiber-optic sensors for point detection of hydrocarbons which employ straight segments of IGI and PCS fibers were investigated. The detection was based on changes of the output optical power due to the penetration of hydrocarbons into the cladding of polysiloxane polymer. Sensing fibers provided with fiber connector-based optical couplers and excited by means of standard telecommunication fibers were used for the detection of aromatic hydrocarbons dissolved in water.
