The 29 Si NMR chemical shifts of trimethylsilylated secon-dary steroid alcohols exhibit significant steric effectswhich can be utilized for steroid structure determination. It is show that these steric effects are governed by solventassociation which is controlled by solvent accessibility ofthe oxygen atom in the steroid molecule. This mechanism ofsteric effects has not yet been reported and it is likelyto operate also on other nuclei an in other molecular sys-tems for which no satisfactory model has been developed.
