AnnotationNot every sperm can fertilize the egg, and the competition among male gametes is fierce. In order to become the chosen one, sperm must fulfil hundreds of tasks without making a single mistake. One of their crucial goals is to relocalize several proteins, which are necessary for sperm-egg interaction, binding and fusion. The dynamic protein network rearrangement already starts during the sperm capacitation and it is completed through the acrosome reaction. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between the primary fusion protein IZUMO1 and the tetraspanin proteins CD46 and β1-integrin. The molecular interaction of CD46 and β1-integrin was proven by using the Proximity Ligation Assay and Super resolution microscopy STED. Sperm that successfully accomplish the repositioning of the crucial proteins in a given time frame certainly gain a selective advantage over the rest of the sperm population.
