An interface between macroscopic twin variants in Ni-Mn-Ga single crystal was investigated using optical differential interference contrast and XRD. This single interface (twin boundary) is highly movable under the stress less than 0.2 MPa. The interface exhibits low angle zig-zag pattern with straight broad bands approximately perpendicular to the interface. Neither mosaic structure nor a-b twins can be correlated with the optical contrast associated with the bands. The modulation or monoclinic twins, detected using non-integer (4.4 0.4 0) planes, showed almost exact correspondence with the optical contrast. The investigation suggests that modulation or monoclinic twins play crucial role in extraordinary high mobility of the Ni-Mn-Ga alloys.
