The studied optical detection of hydrocarbons in waste waters is based on their diffusion from the aqueous solution into the fiber cladding, which causes changes of the refractive index and optical absorption coefficient of the fiber cladding, leading to changes of the fiber output power. The dependence of the fiber response on the velocity of the flow of the agueous solution of toluene in the flow cell has been investigated. Instead of a commonly used PCS fiber, a fiber with an inverted-graded-index /IGI/ profile was employed.
