The paper deals with using thin gel layers coated on silica optical fibers for chemical detection. The sensitivity of polysiloxane layers and TiOTi-doped polysiloxane layers to hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons is discussed with the aim of tailoring both the sensitivity and selectivity of these materials. Data on the sensitivity of polysiloxane gel layers with pH indicators, Cu-phtalocyanine and Cu-ephedrine to acids and organophosphorous compounds are given.
