V době, kdy Josef Václav Myslbek zakládal tradici českého sochařství, byl profesor Wilhelm Klein ředitelem Ústavu pro klasickou archeologii na německé universitě v Praze. Antické sochařství bylo důležitým inspiračním zdrojem tvorby českého sochaře a německý klasický archeolog se ve svých experimentech se sádrovými odlitky antických soch bez účasti sochaře neobešel. Nemáme však žádné důkazy o tom, že by Myslbek s Kleinem osobně spolupracoval na rekonstrukci nějaké antické sochy. V národnostně polarizované Praze přelomu 19. a 20. století se dráhy německého vědce a českého sochaře ani protknout nemohly.
