Volžské Bulharsko se nacházelo daleko za hranicemi islámského centra a Ibn Fadlán nám ve svém arabsky psaném pojednání zanechal barvité zprávy jedinečné historické a etnografické hodnoty o oblastech Eurasie, které cestou spatřil. Svůj popis věnoval zejména zvykům tamních lidí, v mnoha případech pohanským stepním kmenům, především Oghuzům, Pečeněhům a Baškirům, a hlavně samotným volžským Bulharům. Setkal se rovněž s „Rusy“, severskými obchodníky-válečníky, kteří z oblasti Baltu pronikali na jih podél ruských řek, a byl svědkem jejich pohřební ceremonie spálení zesnulého na lodi. Kniha o jeho cestě, která trvala téměř rok a během níž urazil skoro pět tisíc kilometrů, právem náleží ke klenotům středověké, nejen arabské literatury. Description in English In 921, on the instructions of the 'Abbasid caliph, an official mission with Ibn Fadlan set out from Baghdad for the kingdom situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kama rivers. Volga Bulgaria laid far beyond the Islamic centre, and Ibn Fadlan left us in his Arabic-language treatise a colourful account of unique historical and ethnographic value describing the areas of Eurasia he saw on his way. He devoted his description in particular to the customs of the various local people, in many cases the pagan steppe tribes, the Oghuz, the Pechenegs and the Bashkirs, and especially the Volga Bulghars themselves. He also met the 'Rus', the Nordic warrior-traders who penetrated south from the Baltic region along the Russian rivers, and witnessed their funeral ceremony of burning the deceased on a boat. The book about his journey, which lasted almost a year and during which he travelled almost five thousand kilometres, rightly belongs to the jewels of medieval, not only Arabic, literature.
