This study looks at Baroque national and language patriots’ relationship to Czech statehood, which was marked and weakened by the Kingdom of Bohemia’s incorporation into the organisation of the Habsburg Monarchy. We look at five core themes which strengthened Baroque patriots’ relationship to the Czech state: its symbolism, its religious traditions, historical argumentation, the sacralised role of the Czech language, and themes of internal and external threat.
