The study starts from the finding that the history of reading is, despite its great achievements, underrepresented in Czech literary historiography and historiography in general. At the same time, international studies on the history of reading are hardly aware of the particularities - and thus the epistemological potential - of the Central European socio-cultural space, where the relationship to reading is deeply embedded in characteristic religious, ideological, linguistic, ethnic, political and historical constellations that have produced specific forms of reading and uses of texts. The authors therefore present a research programme in which interpretations of insufficiently researched local material serve to question the models and concepts in the history and sociology of reading that are largely based on “Western” evidence and data. They plead for an increased but critical reflection of the Central European (Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Polish) traditions of reading research in the international research landscape.
