Folklore is a part of collective memory not only as part of the history or the heritage. It is one of the ways how people get knowledge about our past and how they speak about it. Therefore, folklore is an active participant on a process of construction, transmitting and re/interpretating of collective memory.
Research of collective memory which is transmitted by contemporary folklore is one of the research areas of Department of Memory studies on the Institute of Ethnology of Czech Academy of Sciences. In the first part of presentation, I briefly introduce the research institution which history is closely connected with early folkloristic research in Czech Republic. The second part focuses on my research of anti-government jokes from Czech and Slovakia from the second half of 20th Century. This research was the first step to the deeply seeking on answer about connection between collective memory and folklore narratives. To the end of presentation, I introduce my current research project about collective memory and cultural perceptions of political leaders in post-socialism countries which is transmitted by jokes.
