In this paper we present results of tiltmeter monitoring
of hazardous slopes of an open-pit mine. The case history is from
the Czech Republic. The two tiltmeter stations were established
inside a horizontal gallery drilled through the slope. The regular
trend of tilting is disturbed by sudden deviations in winter.
During these periods some landslides occurred right at the
beginning of the deviations or even during them. Therefore we
assume the tilt measurements may serve as precursory technique,
especially if supported by independent method like automated
geodetic scanning. As the principal cause of sliding we consider
displacements and accumulation of groundwater.
