Tato kapitola se soustředí na roli map v historii měst. Při studiu měst a velkoměst mohou být mapy jak zdroje tak výstupy historikovy práce. Studie na jedné straně shrnuje využití historických kartografických pramenů v urbánních dějinách v České republice a na druhé straně produkci rekonstrukčních (tematických - historických) map. V této studii je poprvé v češtině shrnut projekt Historický atlas měst (historie a cíle tohoto mezinárodního projektu zabývajícího se urbánními dějinami a topografií v evropské srovnávací perspektivě) jako nejvýstižnějšího příkladu aplikace map ve studiu dějin měst.

This chapter concentrates on the role of maps in urban history. When studying a town or a city, maps can be both, sources and outputs of historians´ work. The paper, on one hand, sums up usage of historic cartographical sources in urban history in the Czech republic and on the other, production of reconstructional (thematic - historic) maps. Being the most illustrative example of application of maps in urban studies, the project Historic Towns Atlas - the history and goals of this international project dealing with urban studies and topography in European comparative perspective - is summarized for the first time in Czech in the present paper.
