Respirable airborne particles (PM2.5) collected in Ostrava-Bartovice (Czech Republic) over the sampling campaign in winter 2012 were extracted by dichloromethane. Extracts were analysed for PAHs, their derivatives and many other components inclusing persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Crude extracts were further fractionated to 4 fractions and each fraction was applied for detailed toxicological study. PAHs and their derivatives, and not POPs, contributed most significantly to overall genotoxic and dioxin-like activities.
