Morphology of metal nanostructures has been proved to play a crucial role in achieving the high enhancement of local electromagnetic field in their vicinity. Here we report on reactive ion plasma treatment as a versatile technique for the production of large area (ready-made) nanogapped templates designed for a subsequent ad-hoc metallization and eventual functionalization procedure. Monolayer of close-packed polystyrene microspheres is deposited on the surface of a silicon wafer. Using a capacitively coupled reactive ion etching plasma system we produce arrays of periodically arranged nonclose packed objects called “nanocorals” with their upper half corrugated to the desired extent. The labyrinthlike nanogapped texture of polystyrene templates contributes to the increase in the surface area together with hindering the deposition of undesirably compact metallic layer.
