Nanoparticles are efficiently removed from the substrates due to transient blister formation. A combination of mass spectrometry, atomic force microscopy studies of the irradiated substrates, and theoretical considerations of temperature distributions and stress in the films during irradiation serves to provide insight into the mechanisms involved.
