The upgrade strategy is based on the LHC plans to increase the luminosity of Pb–Pb collisions progressively after LS2, eventually reaching an interaction rate of about 50 kHz, i.e. instantaneous luminosity of L = 6 × 1027 cm−2 s−1. In the proposed plan, the ALICE detector will be upgraded to enable the read-out of all interactions and accumulate more than 10 nb−1 of Pb–Pb collisions following LS2, corresponding to about 1011 interactions.
