In situ considerate testing of surface cohesion of historic stone and mortar materials still suffers from a very limited availability of suitable affordable non-destructive methods. Similarly, in situ testing of water uptake has exploited rather time consuming and with difficulties appplicable techniques. The problem is mainly important for assessment of surface degradation characteristic and/or evaluation of effectiveness of consolidation treatment of degraded historic materials. The paper presents two simple testing methods which provide reliable data on material cohesion and water uptake.
