AnotaceThe formation of droplets in low-pressure steam turbines has a significant impact on the efficiency of energy conversion due to the strongly non-equilibrium nature of this process. The condensed water further erodes the turbine blades. The relative importance of heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation processes in steam turbines is still unclear. The knowledge of the heterogeneous particles size distribution and other their properties are useful for the modelling of the phase transition during the steam expansion as well. We present measurements of heterogeneous particles in superheated (dry) steam prior to condensation onset. The measurements were performed using a special steam sampling device and, alternatively, a diffusion battery (DB) of the scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). Compared to SMPS results, DB revealed a smaller geometric mean particle size. The concentrations of particles determined in the steam turbines do not explain the total mass of chemicals present in condensed samples of steam.
