The study deals with public space both as a physical phenomenon and social phenomenon. It defines its fundamental meaning and briefly mentions the development of public spaces in Czech towns before 1989. The focus of the study is however in the evaluation of the development during recent years showing both its positive and neagative aspects: On one side it is democratisation, sensitive reconstruction of spaces in historic core of towns, new aesthetical tendencies in shaping new spaces - on the other side is too strong commercialization of these spaces, their submission to tourism and the lack of interesting spaces in the places of everyday life of inhabitants.
