Concurrently with the rediscovery of Central Europe and the fall of the Iron Curtain what had been for long decades unthinkable opportunities for direct access to, in the broadest sense, foreign experiences also opened up for young researchers hailing from these countries. The author works on this question with a particular consideration for the Czech and Polish milieux. At the same time he also discusses the importance of scholarly expeditions to Great Britain and the United States of America.
