AnnotationThe work focused on various aspects of the use of copper pigments in different types of painted artworks by means of material investigation approach combining the non-invasive in situ techniques with subsequent micro-analytical laboratory techniques. Based on analyses of the extensive set of artworks (180 samples from 102 artworks), the material characteristics for the micro-analytical differentiation of particular copper pigments in paint layers were found and the suitable analytical methodology was set up. Materials characteristics (fingerprints) were found and described to distinguish between natural, artificial and corrosion-based origin of the copper pigments. Model experiments were carried out with respects to the composition of the real paint layers to reveal degradation phenomena affecting these pigments including moisture, salt solutions, oxalic acid, alkaline environment and binding media. Selected copper pigments were synthesised and characterised.
