SYSNO ASEP 0375604 Document Type D - Thesis R&D Document Type The record was not marked in the RIV Title Preparation, Identification and degradation of copper-based inorganic painting pigments Author(s) Švarcová, Silvie (UACH-T) SAI, RID, ORCID Issue data 2011 Language eng - English Country CZ - Czech Republic Keywords copper-based pigments ; micro-analysis ; works of art Subject RIV CA - Inorganic Chemistry R&D Projects GA203/07/1324 GA ČR - Czech Science Foundation (CSF) CEZ AV0Z40320502 - UACH-T (2005-2011) Annotation The work focused on various aspects of the use of copper pigments in different types of painted artworks by means of material investigation approach combining the non-invasive in situ techniques with subsequent micro-analytical laboratory techniques. Based on analyses of the extensive set of artworks (180 samples from 102 artworks), the material characteristics for the micro-analytical differentiation of particular copper pigments in paint layers were found and the suitable analytical methodology was set up. Materials characteristics (fingerprints) were found and described to distinguish between natural, artificial and corrosion-based origin of the copper pigments. Model experiments were carried out with respects to the composition of the real paint layers to reveal degradation phenomena affecting these pigments including moisture, salt solutions, oxalic acid, alkaline environment and binding media. Selected copper pigments were synthesised and characterised. Workplace Institute of Inorganic Chemistry Contact Jana Kroneislová, krone@iic.cas.cz, Tel.: 311 236 931 Year of Publishing 2012
