Determination of stability of a dynamical system is an important part of the design process of slender structures. This applies for instance when analysing bridges, where the flow-structure interaction is taking place in its entire complexity. The author presents the analysis of such an aeroelastic system, with the emphasis on a rather physical interpretation and explanation of recent engineering findings. The aeroelastic system is mathematically described with a double degree-of-freedom model containing generalized non-linear gyroscopic and non-conservative terms. This model can be considered as an extension of the commonly used linear models representing bending and torsion of a slender beam vibrating in a cross flow.
