Monoterpeny prostupují celé naše prostředí a mají nesporný význam jak pro rostliny, které je produkují, tak pro další organismy včetně člověka. Rostliny se jejich pomocí brání škůdcům a zároveň jimi lákají opylovače. Pro nás jsou nepostradatelné jako chuťové a vonné látky, jež navíc pozitivně ovlivňují naše zdraví. Monoterpeny ovlivňují i kvalitu ovzduší, zejména množství ozónu v troposféře.
The article deals with the role of monoterpenes in the environment and their biosynthesis in plants. Monoterpenes play a significant role in plant defence and communication with the environment, especially with insect pests and pollinators. They are also considered bioactive compounds due to a great impact on human health. Monoterpenes show antimicrobial and antifungal properties and may also prevent cancer.
