Mitochondria are one of the causes of cell aging, because their production of oxygen radicals (ROS) and a decline of their function in the course of aging are causing defects in the respiratory machinery. We measured the respiration rate of whole cells and isolated mitochondria of different age groups, both chronological and replicative, of two yeast strains – wild type and isogenic RAS2val19 with the oncogenic mutation causing premature aging, and show the impact of oncogenic mutation on respiration rate in relation to the cell age
