The authors introduce a framework which allows them to analyse how, when and why two distinct work-care models evolved in Czechoslovakia and East Germany, and how pre-1989 institutional developments influenced post-1989 work-care attitudes and behaviours in the region. The article contributes to existing explanations of work-care models in Central and Eastern Europe.
