Annotation
The paper presents results of tests on a reconstituted fine grated soil in a recently developed direct shear box apparatus with freely vertically movable upper frame. Frictional force developed due to relative movement between the specimen and the upper part of the shear box due to contractant volumetric deformation of the specimen during shearing. The results of direct shear tests compared with the results of triaxial tests give significantly smaller shear strength if no corrections due to frictional force are applied.
