AnnotationThe study elaborates on little researched subject of public involvement in supporting the development of Czech schools and culture. The Czech public tried as much as its means allowed to compensate in this respect for the unjust treatment of Czech needs by the central government. Behind the public initiative was a general belief in democratic philosophy, which was shared by various organizations, many individuals and a few wealthy citizens. This broad and decades lasting initiative was substantially contributing to the positive development of the Czech nation in the 19th century.
