The unmodified and the hydroxymethylated lignins were analyzed by spectroscopics methods (FTIR, UV-VIS and fluorescence spectroscopy), and atomic force microscopy (ATM). The results point out that the reactivity level of lignin depends on its origin and structure of lignin, while the characteristics of the synthesized products result from the modifications induced by the new functional groups.
