Induction of the phenol hydroxylase and catechol dioxygenase activity with phenol was suppressed by succinate in the growth medium, whereas presence of glucose did not influence it. The cluster of genes responsible for phenol degradation, pheA2A1RcatRABC, was cloned and sequenced. To improve the phenol-catabolic activity, recombinant strains R. erythropolis (pSRKcatRABC), R. erythropolis (pSRKpheA2A1R) and R. erythropolis catR were constructed. In all cases, the constructed strains degraded phenol faster than the WT-strain
