Monografie se zabývá zejména archeologickými výzkumy v egyptské Západní poušti, kde skupina egyptologů, archeologů a přírodovědců zkoumala širší oblast oázy Bahariya, zejména dílčí oázu El-Héz s „mrtvým městem“ Bír Šovíš.
The monograph deals with the archaeological exploration in Western Desert where a group of Czech scientists, mostly egyptologists, archaeologists and naturalists worked in the broad area of Bahariya Oasis, especially in „dead city“ Bir Shovish of El Hayes Oasis. The Western desert played important role at the end of Neolithic period when dessication aprox. 5 ky BC has caused large migration to Nile Valley. The belt of oases formed important route even in later periods of Roman Limes and Coptic cities. The book summarises the results of Czech team from the point of Saharan Neolitic, ancient Egyptian development, Roman, Coptic and medieval archaaeology, geology of desert processes and vegetational changes.
