Description in English The thesis concentrates on the life and work of Nikolai Lvovich Okunev (1885–1949), an important historian of art and a world-known representative of Medieval studies, Professor at Charles University in Prague. Okunev´s research work and his cultural involvement are presented in the thesis in the wide context of research activities of different institutions (Russian Archaeological Institute in Constantinople, University in Saint Petersburg, Charles University, Institute of Slavonic Studies and the Slavonic Library in Prague), history of important research expeditions (to Old Russian towns, Ottoman Armenia, the Balkans, the excavations at Ani in Armenia), the conservation work in the Church of St. Panteleimon at Nerezi and in the Church of St. Sophia in Ohrid, his contacts to scholars from all the world.
