Approaches for the detection of hydrocarbons dissolved in water which are based silica optical fibers are discussed in the paper. They include measurement of hydrocarbon spectra in a region of 1600-1800 nm and 250-350 nm by using PCS fibers with lengths of several meters which were coiled on supports. Detection approaches based on refractive-index changes of polymeric detection membranes coated on straight short PCS fibers excited by an inclined collimated beam are discussed as well.
