Environmental and health effects of hydrocarbons dissolved in water are discussed. Details on fiber-optic sensors based on midinfrared or UV spectral measurements or refractive-index detection are shown. Principles of polymeric sensing membranes applied on the sensing fibers are discussed and examples of frequently used membranes are given in the lecture.
