We review here findings of nonrandom distibution of genes in animal genomes across large genetic distances (billions of years). While the gene oranization of more closely related animals (such as vertebrates) is known to be similar, much less have been published on comparative mapping of genes across large genetic distances andonly a few reports pay attention to synteny analysis of genes unrelated by sequence and function.
