AnnotationThe study of fatigue of materials and structures started in the nineteenth century because of the appearance of service fractures during cyclic loading of components in some branches of developing industries. With the aim of clarifying the sources of the fatigue damage and to find the governing laws, event at this early period material specimens of suitable geometry were produced, and variable mechanical stress or strain was applied to these specimens in various types of testing machines. Two basic approaches were adopted in the study of materials fatigue: (i) the phenomenological description of cyclic deformation and of the fatigue life and fracture, and (ii) the study of the mechanisms of cyclic straining and of fatigue damage.
