Modern Chinese is a tone language. The realization of four lexical tones in the fluent speech is modified by the level of stress of the individual syllables. The paper offers a prosodic transcription designed as a tool for teaching spoken Mandarin. The transcription renders the stress values of the syllables, and rhythmical segmentation. It assumes four levels of stress. The notation is primarily based on the contrast of stressed and unstressed syllables, which can be visually distinguished in the text at first glance.
