Administration of a selective blocker of mitochondrial ATP sensitive potassium channels (KATP) 5-hydroxydecanoate abolished cardioprotective effects of chronic hypoxia; administration of selective KATP channels openers (diazoxide and BMS 191095) induced protection in normoxic hearts and but did not influence hypoxic heart. The results suggest that opening of mitochondrial KATP channels is involved in the cardioprotective mechanism conferred by long-term adaptation to chronic hypoxia.
