Ab initio calculations of electron densities and currents are presented for two metallic electrodes separated by a vacuum layer. The electrodes are treated within a jellium model and effects of finite bias voltages are taken into account in terms of nonequilibrium Green\'s functions. It is shown that the approach is valid only in a limited range of bias voltages
