This is undoubtedly stimulated by catastrophic floods on one hand as well as unexpected drying-out of especially smaller running waters on the other. This phenomenon, currently occurring for example in semiarid Mediterranean South Europe, has so far occurred rather exceptionally within predominantly humid continental climate of Central Europe. The Czech Republic, situated just in the centre of the European continent and at the boundaries of three sea-drainage areas, shows a high percentage of small (first to third order by Strahler) running waters. Consequently, any disturbance of stability of such habitats would indicate substantial changes in the whole landscape.
