Electrophysiological studies during normal development were so far performed in a number of popular model species: mouse, rat, rabbit, chick, with less detailed reports from zebrafish, human, and most recently, later fetal quail. Comparison of data revealed mostly similarities, with the most important differences being in timing of developmental transitions heralding functionality of the His-Purkinje system. We conclude that ventricular activation patterns of quail embryos are very similar to those of the chick, with the exception of earlier appearance of apex-to-base patterns. While regions of regional hypoxia correlate with the sites of conduction system formation, general hypoxia did not have any influence upon conduction system maturation.
