AnnotationMetal layers were deposited onto 50 micrometers thick LDPE and HDPE substrates using diode sputtering. Simultaneous post-deposition annealing and Ar plasma treatment was used to study metal/polymer intermixing at the interface. Concentration profiles of diffused Ag were determined by Rutherford back-scattering spectrometry (RBS). Ag diffusion coefficients in LDPE and HDPE were extracted. Morphology changes after the plasma treatment were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Surface fraction of Ag and plasma induced surface chemistry modification was investigated using XPS analysis. The type of polymer substrate (roughness of polymer substrate, removal rate in Ar plasma) influences Ag particle mobility at metal/polymer interface under plasma treatment. Diffusion coefficients Ag in LDPE and HDPE are higher comparing to diffusion coefficients in PET polymer after Ar plasma treatment.
