AnnotationThe cytochrome P450s are an essential group of enzymes involved in metabolism of many substances including drugs and foreign chemicals. These enzymes inactivate toxic chemicals, including chemotherapeutic agents and also participate in drug bioactivation. These reactions primarily occur in organs and tissues known to express cytochrome P450 ubiquitously (i.e. liver and gastrointestinal tract). Cytochrome 450s are functional in other normal tissues as well as in tumours. The expression pattern of p450 isoforms in many tissues is not known. The published study elucidated the expression of P450s in purified hematopoietic CD34+ stem/progenitor cells. P450 1B1 and P450 2E1 isoforms were expressed while no sythesis of P450 3A4, P450 3A7, and P450 2C9 was observed. Both expressed isoforms are known to be connected with cancer cells and with activation of procarcinogens. Thus, early blood cells might be especially sensitive to several xenobiotics.
