Annotation
This article is based on data derived from the work of Rajaniemi et al. (2005) that focused on the systematic classification of nostocalean cyanoprokaryotic genera by using combined phenotypic and genotypic criteria of numerous bloom-forming cyanobacterial strains. The taxonomic value of several phenotypic characters is re-evalu-ated in relation with genetic data obtained on the studied strains (mainly including the traditional genera Anabaena and Aphanizomenon). One new generic entity (Cuspidothrix genus novum, with the type species C. issatschenkoi, based on the traditional species Aphanizomenon issatschenkoi) is defined, which is separated from up to dare described genera according to cytomorphological criteria and molecular supporting.
