AnnotationFatigue loading of ultra fine-grained Cu prepared by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) results in development of shear bands at the specimen surface. They are sites of crack initiation both in low- and high-cycle fatigue. Their density and shape at given place is dependent on the mutual orientation of the normal to the surface, slip direction in the last ECAP shear plane and direction of loading. The equiaxed dislocation structure produced by ECAP is not prone to the coarsening due to cyclic loading.
