Tato kniha se věnuje problematice logické analýzy hypotetických (kondicionálních) vět, tj. vět formy “Pokud A, pak B”. V klasické logice jsou tyto věty analyzovány pomocí takzvané materiální implikace. Je však známo, že tento druh analýzy je v mnoha ohledech problematický a vede k takzvaným paradoxům materiální implikace. V knize jsou představeny nejvýznamnější argumenty, které klasickou logiku obhajují navzdory těmto paradoxům, ale také nejvýznamnější teorie, které tyto paradoxy řeší tím, že klasickou logiku revidují. V závěrečné části knihy autor představuje svoji vlastní analýzu paradoxů materiální implikace. Tato analýza vede ke konstrukci sémantického systému nazvaného “sémantika tvrditelnosti”. Tato sémantika otevírá nové perspektivy a poskytuje řešení logických paradoxů spojených s hypotetickými větami.

The book is mainly concerned with the problem of the logical analysis of hypothetical (conditional) statements, i.e. sentences of the form “If A then B”'. In classical logic, these sentences are analyzed with the help of the so-called material implication. It is well-known that this kind of analysis is problematic in many respects and leads to the so-called paradoxes of material implication. The book presents the most significant arguments that, in spite of these paradoxes, defend classical logic, as well as the most important theories that revise classical logic to avoid the paradoxes. In the last part of the book, an original epistemic analysis of the paradoxes of material implication is developed. This analysis results in the construction of a semantic framework that is denoted as the “semantics of assertibility”. It opens new perspectives and is used to provide a solution to the already discussed logical paradoxes related to hypothetical sentences.
